My Next Big Thing

Jan 28

7631954556_58711b56a4_bMy talented, creative, soon-to-be MFA friend Andrea of the Remains of the Day gave me a kick in the pants last week when she tapped me to participate in a cool meme that is making the rounds in different iterations among several of my favorite blogs: “The Next Big Thing.”

It’s no secret that I’ve been spinning my wheels a bit these past few post-holiday weeks, but Andrea’s invitation helped motivate me to clarify and organize my writing goals for the year and, more importantly, to shut up and start writing.

And, in the spirit of the meme, she’s inspired me to share with you my own Next Big Thing.

So here goes: I’m writing a book – a nonfiction work about mothers who were writers and writers who were mothers. In the next couple of months as I continue to read and research and dig up facts about mother-writers from long ago, I hope to give shape to a real, honest-to-goodness book proposal that I will shop to agents.

As much as I love blogging and writing essays and book reviews, I’m never as deep in my flow as when I’m researching and writing historical pieces. I like to think of it as blending my former life with my current one in a way that feels seamless and energizing and good – and, as I’m learning from the mother-writers throughout history – that’s not always so easy to do once you have kids.

So, yeah. I’m writing a book. My book. That’s my Next Big Thing.

I’d love to hear about yours.

This is such wonderful news :) I’m sitting here smiling a huge smile for you!
{and my next big thing… is shaping up right now as well. Only perhaps a bit of historical fiction… eeek… not something I planned, but it’s playing out in scribbles and day dreams and I can’t not put it to paper… }

This is thrilling to hear! I can’t wait to see a book with your name on it. And I’m a total sucker for historical fiction. I just finished reading Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies – unlike anything I’ve ever read in the genre and so, so terrific.

Can’t wait to learn more about your project! xo

The career counselor in me so clearly sees this book as a manifestation of all your loves, passions, and former and present selves! You have the talent, skill, and discipline to make this happen. My next big thing? Ideas percolating for a book — memoir — of my own!

I’m with Elizabeth — when I read your idea, my first thought was, “Well, of course that’s what it would be for Kristen!” Couldn’t imagine a better person to take on such a project with the kind of passion it’s clear you’ll bring to it :).

Fabulous! What a perfect project for you. And ambitious! Hope we get to read excerpts from time to time…for marketing purposes of course. ;-)

I’ve loved this idea from the very first post about it. I think it will resonate with so many women who are writers who are mothers. I look forward to reading it!

My next big thing: I am working on a novel as well. It’s sort of done but in the heavy editing stage. I love the idea of your book!

That’s so exciting, Kristen! I’m the opposite, where I’d be completely daunted with all the research of historical facts, so I can’t wait to read your next big thing.

Love this! Congrats on your clarity and on verbalizing your “thing” to the universe. Can’t wait to read it! I am also working on a novel – in the very beginning stages – and feel scared to talk about it. Thanks for modeling courage for me!

I wasn’t sure at first that I was ready to share this “big thing” with the world, but I like that I now feel a sense of accountability. I’ve told you all that it’s coming so now I’d better get to work!

Can’t wait to hear more about your novel when you’re ready to share. :)

That sounds like a fantastic idea for a book Kristen. I hope you have fun with it. Hmm, I am currently in tread water mode so nothing new and exciting to report. TBA I guess.

What a great topic to write about and to read about! I know you’ve been exploring the subject for a while and I really think there’s a lot of good things to dig up.

My book ideas are way off for your topic: a few children’s books and some cartoon/comic type book on motherhood…

Reply

Kristen January 29, 2013 at 3:10 pm

I think your book ideas are probably a lot more marketable than mine. I’m pretty sure children’s books are the one area of publishing that hasn’t taken too much of a hit in the digital age. And a comic book on motherhood?! I’m totally intrigued!

Perfecting Motherhood January 29, 2013 at 6:52 pm

My ideas for children’s books revolve more around play on words and funny visuals, rather than stories, so we’ll see if the idea bites when I figure dedicate the time to work on them. As for the motherhood book, it would be a collection of hilarious things my kids and other kids have said in comic strip format. I want these to be real quotes and not just jokes, because nothing beats what kids say!

Love your next big thing. You have a knack for it, and I think history is fascinating. It’s an unusual theme, which will hopefully garner interest because it’s not more of the same thing. And I know you can make it interesting.

My current big thing, which consumes every spare minute, is that I’m publishing my memoire on my blog, a chapter a week. It doesn’t matter how polished I think it is. I revise and revise and edit and edit. It does help to do the once a week thing because then I can focus on a small part at a time.

I’ve been loving your “big thing”! Your life is totally fascinating and I’m really enjoying reading about it episodically each week.

Oh, your Next Big Thing sounds fabulous! I can’t wait to read it; this sounds like it will be right up my alley. (Not surprisingly.)

My Next Big Thing is a book, too — I’m working with my editor at Phoenicia Publishing toward the release of my collection of first-year-of-motherhood poems, hopefully in time for mother’s day this year. (Stay tuned!)
