Forever Plaid

Oct 05

When I saw Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompts this week, the first one stopped me in my tracks:

What comes to mind when you think of the word “plaid”?

What comes to mind, you ask? Just nine years of wearing the haute couture that is a Catholic school uniform!

May I present Exhibit A?

Here I am with my brother on September 7, 1983, my first day of second grade. I was six.

Yes, I know. I was hot stuff.

You’ve got some swagger going on there, girl!
I went to catholic school, too, but sadly, no plaid.

I like how you have your thumbs hitched into the straps like overalls.

Ugh, I remember well the days of the polyester Catholic school jumper with the white polyester blend shirt with the butterfly collar. Shudder…the things parents do to their kids!!

Oh, you are rockin’ that skirt, girl! I love it!

Your skirts had suspenders?! Mine were never so fashionable ;) But we did have matching plaid bell-bottoms (these in 1993!).

The littlest girls wore jumpers and the older girls wore skirts without suspenders. Not sure if the suspenders were connected to grade or just something the uniform company was trying out.

But plaid bell-bottoms!? Haute couture indeed! ;)

So cute, I can’t stand it! My first thought when I read plaid was 90′s grunge ;-)

Oh, wow… I think I remember an old Britney Spears music video where she wore a similar uniform, about 4 sizes too small though.

I love that little tie thing. I’m going to get Nora to wear one.

Two other Catholic schools merged with my kid’s school this fall, and they ended up with a new plaid. And I actually think it is cute (red and navy). Their old plaid looked at bit like yours, and I was not a huge fan. In any event, when I think of plaid, I think of my kid in her sort-of-cute skirt.

At some point, we traded in the brown plaid for a much more fetching navy one. Wonder whatever became of those old brown uniforms once they could no longer be given away as hand-me-downs…

Adorable!

When I think of plaid I think of my first trip to a Hollywood soundstage where I got to meet Steve Martin, wearing plaid because he was starring in a movie that came and went, but had a great title: “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid”

Oh I had that same outfit just a different plaid and I wore it for 8 long years.

Adorable!

(I seem to recall a pretty wild pair of plaid pants in Junior High School. The very thought makes me shudder now!)

What was it about Catholic schools that made everyone wear plaid? I remember a lot of my friends doing the same.

Awww…I love it!

My daughter doesn’t go to a Catholic school but whenever I see a plaid skirt, I have to get it for her. She wears them to school, and I think it’s the cutest thing. I suppose it’s a little different if you *have* to wear it, versus choosing to do so.

You know, I didn’t actually mind wearing a uniform for the most part. I’ve never had a very strong (or very impressive) sense of style so it was a relief in a way to not have to worry about dressing to impress.
