A few weeks ago, my buddy Liz at …but then I had kids bestowed upon little-old-prone-to-blushing-me the Plastic Joy Award. As you can see from the rather suggestive picture above, the Plastic Joy award is all about embracing Lust. And how convenient that today’s Five for Ten topic is Lust, giving me the chance to kill two birds with one stone.
Not that I have anything against birds.
Or stones.
But I digress.
The rules of accepting the award require me to name five characters who light my personal fire. As Liz was quick to point out in her post, “the rules state that I must select characters, not celebrities.” So below please find a selection of five fictional gentlemen who keep my, ahem, home fires burning.
1. Aragorn, son of Arathorn. I mean, seriously, people. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Aragorn, the hero king of the United People is a noble man, who leads a ragtag fellowship on a quest to defeat the evil lord Sauron. And that’s nice and all. But as portrayed by Danish-American actor Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, Aragorn embodies steely sexiness as he captures the hearts and minds of the people (and hobbits and elves and dwarves) of Middle Earth. Brave, poetic, sweet, musical – and loyal to the same woman for hundreds of years. This guy’s got it all.
2. Han Solo: Of all the roles played by Harrison Ford – my ultimate heartthrob for most of my childhood and teenage years – this one is probably my favorite (with Indiana Jones being a very close second). Like Aragorn, Han Solo knows his way around a weapon and a heroic quest. He is cocky and impetuous, but ultimately loyal to his friends. And he’s got a wicked sense of humor and a disarming smile. Yum.
3. James “Sawyer” Ford: Liz blatantly stole this pick from me, knowing full well how this guy, the anti-hero of ABC’s Lost, makes me weak in the knees. I don’t know if it’s his Southern drawl or devil-may-care attitude, but he alone has kept me hooked on the twisty-turny series for the past several seasons. I imagine I’m not the only good girl with a thing for bad boys (or at least the idea of bad boys), and Sawyer is the perfect one: a good boy in bad boy’s (unwashed) clothing.
4. Drover: In Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 epic Australia, Hugh Jackman (he’s the one on the right) plays the role of an independent cattle driver hired by Nicole Kidman’s Lady Sarah to help drive her cattle across the Australian outback. Maybe I just have a thing for accents…or unshaven men…or men with unbuttoned shirts, but, even in this marathon of a movie, I fell for Jackman’s character, a man who would stop at nothing to save the woman and child he came to love. And to look so good while doing it? Well, that’s just a bonus.
5. Fitzwilliam Darcy: While I have long been a fan of Jane Austen and her novel Pride and Prejudice, it was not until I saw the 1995 BBC TV adaptation, starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy that I came to associate this character with sheer smolder. The pride and, well, prejudice of this snobby man mixed with his dignity, honor, and total sexiness when emerging from a pond after a spontaneous post-horse-riding dip gets me hot under the high, lacy collar. Mr. Darcy, “you must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” ‘Cause I do.
Which character of film or page pushes your proverbial buttons?

Oh, I’m definitely with you on the Han Solo!
Oh Kristen. How delightful! Leave it to you to address the lusty lusciousness of the latest literary Momalom musing with such wit and finesse.
I also swoon over Hugh Jackman and Colin Firth makes me weak in the knees. And the older he gets, the more so. Astonishing how that works at times, isn’t it?
By the way, I am trying to think lusty thoughts (certainly they will be less delicately put than yours, I fear) – so I may move my brain from TKW’s delightful weekend awesomeness of last night (go read her – South-Park yourself!).
I will lustify myself shortly, and who knows what will … um, come… of that.
But do give me a few hours to do so. A woman of my ilk needs a touch of perfume, a second cup of café, and just the right ambiance to conjure the concupiscent co-conspirators of writhing writing…
Happy Sunday.
Ahhh, sigh… Mr. Darcy takes the cake.
Oh yes, and the frosting too!
Thanks for stopping by Motherese, alita!
Ooowwwwhoooooohhh!!!![wolf howl]
I don’t think Husband knows to this day that Aragon is the only reason I sat through all three long walks.
Oh yay, Kristen, I am so glad you did it after all! And how perfectly clever of you to have saved it for this…b/c I have thought many a time: Is it too damn soon to recycle my character post for the lust topic? I mean, really, Sawyer=Lust. And I totally did NOT steal him from you as I have been pining away for him since episode one and never ever watch anything sci-fi-y or complicated, and yet here I am, hanging on his every nickname. (I like to think he’d call me “Dimples.” Deep, deep, guttural sigh on my end.)
And Darcy? Pride and Prejudice..one of my faves!
Okay, okay, Dimples. I accept your claim on Sawyer. Maybe we can share him? Kind of like Kate and Juliet? :)
That got from The Mentalist.
And Robert Downey Jr.
mmmhummmm
Ha! I meant that GUY from The Mentalist.
GOT. freudian slip?
My mom loves that guy! I’ve never seen the show, but he’s gorgeous in pictures!
Love the idea of this post….
What about Clark Kent…or SuperMan….or clark Kent….or SuperMan…
Yes! Another oldy, but goody. I used to have Superman on VHS and would watch it over and over again in the 80s.
I’ve watched that last few minutes of the BBC Pride and Prejudice a hundred times. “Ardently” is the word that gets me. And the scene when he’s watching her play the piano…. Oh my!
Loyalty does it for me as well. Nothing so sexy as a man who sticks around through thick and thin and is still in love with his woman.
Excecllent post, Kristen. And you killed two birds with one stone…not that I either have anything against birds or stones!
Oh fun! I love oogling, I mean analyzing characters! Good list, you!
Aragon!! Now that got my pistons firing.
You are missing some really good ones–Johnny Depp in Chocolat! Does it get any sexier!
Rhet Butler (Clark Gable) in Gone with the Wind, Omar Sherif in Doctor Zhivago.
Colin Firth but in Love Actually!
Oooooo, Terry! Yes! Colin Firth in Love Actually was totally scrumptious. The best part of that film! (He can do everything in my book. Um… you know what I mean.)
Can we still be friends, Terry, if I admit that I’ve never seen Chocolat or, gasp!, Gone with the Wind?
I know, I know. The shame, the shame.
Aragon. I get that.
But I also love/lust George Clooney of the ER days.
Absolutely! Here’s an analogy for you: Aragorn is to Legolas as Dr. Ross is to Dr. Carter. (I think you and I fall into the Aragorn/Doug Ross camp.)
Ooh – how about Wyatt Earp in Tombstone? Kurt Russell in a duster is to die for! Virgil Earp (Sam Elliott) is pretty hot too!
Uh-oh, another one I haven’t seen, but I do love a good Western! Unforgiven is probably one of my favorite movies of all time.
Mmmm, Sawyer, hell yes!
Aragorn, yes. Though, I’m still an old-fashioned girl who falls in love with John Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler Every. Single. Time.
I am a huge fan of John Cusack. And the scene in Say Anything with the boom box and “In Your Eyes”? Swoon!
Bestill my heart when gazing upon Colin Firth as Darcy! I have to do this post too (thanks to Maria!) and he’s on my list. What a great idea to do it for lust – I feel a steal, oh I mean borrow, coming on…
Beg, borrow, or steal away, Linda! I’d love to see your picks!
I think I will have to fight you for the first three picks. Especially Sawyer. Be. still. my. heart. And other um…parts.
Oh Aragon….The first time I saw LOTR, he was all I could think about.
As a guy, I must admit that all your choices are dudes I wouldn’t mind waking up as, at least for a day or smoldering adventurous two.
When I think of their counterparts, I am partial to Jane Eyre, especially if Scarlett Johansson is playing her (although Darcy is also a great name for a girl).
As for Hans and Indy, I prefer the “Sheltering Sky” Debra Winger than the Indiana Jones edition, and Han’s girl is just too princessy.
In the world of surreal Hollywood, I have toiled shoulder-to-shoulder with Aragorn’s thespian interpreter on parent work-day at school, but nothing, I tell you NOTHING, of Vigo’s raw earthy charm rubbed off on me (although we did chat about our shared fascination with ravens).
Still, when I look at that sand box in my kid’s former elementary school I know that I schlepped just as much of that sand up there as he did. I guess there’s just way too much Hobbit in me :)
Bruce, I am even more pleased to consider you a friend knowing that it brings me one step closer to Viggo! ;)
Yes, Kristen. Any John Cusack character is good with me. I totally love Jonathan in Serendipity.
Count me as another Sawyer fan. I also get tingly over Bilal in Hideous Kinky, Noah in The Notebook, and Derek Morgan from Criminal Minds. Yum!
More characters I don’t know, but must check out!
I would run away and marry Colin Firth in a second (let alone a character he plays…)
And same goes for Hugh Jackman…
My heart is beating a bit faster after reading your post :) Love love love your picks!
If you are in lust with Darcy, you must read “Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife,” by Linda Berdoll. Just don’t read it in a place where how turned on you are would be noticed.
Now that sounds like a must read!
And as far as characters go (because I’m apparently just so awesome at answering specific questions!!) I’d totally go Big from SATC. Which is so wrong, but so right ;)
(in reality, I picked an Aiden over a Big… and it still haunts me to this day, but was so the right decision in real life… sigh…)
Will you fly out here and go to see Sex and the City 2 with me opening weekend? Pretty please? (Aidan’s in it, you know.)
I’m so stoked that you’re doing this, too! It’s hilarious how different our dudes are and yet…if you look at the qualities we pick them for? Not so much!
Aragorn (didn’t remember his name until now) is hot, for sure. His character is great. I think Darcy is a rite of passage for women, don’t you?
I don’t know if you’ve read The Brothers K by David James Duncan (if not, you should!) but I feel in deep deep love with the character Everett Chance.
I haven’t read that book, Michele, but I love book recommendations. I’m also impressed by your ability to fall for a literary character. Your imagination must be better than mine!
Daniel Desario (aka James Franco, in Freaks and Geeks). The bad boys will get you every time.
You know, I’ve never seen that show, but have heard raves. And I think James Franco is adorable. Sounds like a new series to add to the Netflix queue.
Thanks, Elizabeth!
I am just happy to know that there is someone else who might catch the LOR references I occasionally scatter in my posts.
Call me a big geek, but I have always wondered what Lúthien Tinúviel would look like.
In real life, I have to think about it a bit, but I’d probably include Scarlett on that list. There are others, but…
Maybe a little something like Liv Tyler? :)
I so affirm your Mr. Darcy lust. I’ll throw in Matthew McCaughnahey (how the heck do you spell that?), but ONLY in A Time to Kill. It’s been downhill since then.
A big fat yes to Matthew M. in A Time to Kill (and a not-so-much to him lately). There’s one scene in particular where both he and Ashley Judd are framed in this magnificent golden light and they both look just impossibly gorgeous.
Agreed on Sawyer from Lost. I left my other’s on Kitch’s post in this vein. Jason Bourne tops the list!
Excellent call on Jason Bourne. I am a huge fan of Matt Damon, but unfortunately I have the visual image of him in The Informant stuck in my head. Not the prettiest picture, I assure you!
I’m in love with Drover! I went right out and bought that DVD! haha I also love Wolverine!! (Maybe I love Hugh Jackman — haha.)
And what about Kyle Chandler from Friday Night Lights? I love this family guy, football coach, all around nice guy!
You are now the 1000th person who’s recommended Friday Night Lights to me. Another thing for the Netflix queue!
I’ll second you on Sawyer and Aragorn!!
My celebrity crush? Eric Bana. OH yeah!
Mmm, yes to Eric Bana – any role in particular?
Hahah! The other day I was driving and the car in front of me had a bumper sticker: SEARCHING FOR MR. RIGHT.
Only, Mr. Right was crossed out, and in red pen was: Mr. Darcy.
Genius!
Colin Firth as Darcy? Yummy!
This is a fun post!
Definite YES to Mr. Darcy. Also, Matt Damon in the Bourne movies…I have a thing for spies. Especially spies that can memorize maps in 2 seconds, drive a car down a flight of stairs, and speak French. Scrumptious.
I’m with you on Aragorn. What a man, makes me want to be strong and tough and excuses my not shaving.
Aragorn. Yummy. Geeky yummy is even better. :)
With a name and taste in men like yours, Kristen, you are always welcome here at Motherese! Thanks for stopping by!
:) Kristen
Han Solo! Rawr! Love your take on it, brilliant to combine the two. I mean, who doesn’t automatically think lust when they see two plastic dolls tangled in each other? :) Love ya, lady!
Good thing I don’t think “lust” whenever I see stuffed animals entangled: that’s a daily occurrence in my sons’ room! :)
Oh, Aragorn, be still my heart. I can’t even begrudge him for loving Arwen (and not me). =>
You’re a better woman than I! ;)
Re: Aragorn – what Stacia said.
Re: Sawyer and Mr. Darcy (both hard-to-get, in their own ways)- what you said.
Johnny Depp (think Chocolat) is on my hot list, too.
What a fun post.
I noticed you didnt pick “Andy Garcia” as a man to lust after. Was that a mere accident? lol
cause he is super HOT.
Oh, I’m a big Andy Garcia fan too. Any particular role you like him in?
Haaaan Solo…
Hilarious. Totally. Wish I had been witty enough to think of this. You can talk about sex but, because you’re contemplating sex with fictional characters, it doesn’t really count, right? (And, thus, this Catholic girl doesn’t have to get all embarrassed…)
Yeah, it’s pretty G-rated, Kathryn, but the good Catholic girl in me was still a little embarrassed to publish it!
You know the list? The list of Five Freebies? I am forever updating mine. Pretty sure I would never act on this, and also pretty sure I don’t need to put a lot of thought into whether I would act on it. But it’s a fun game to play…
I’m very much with you on Colin Firth. The other four are… Joel McHale, Jimmy Fallon, the Chairman from Iron Chef (should I admit this?), and Enrique Murciano (Without a Trace, anyone?).
Is Joel McHale the guy on Community, my new favorite sit-com? ‘Cause, yeah, he’s pretty hot. (If I’m thinking of the right guy, did you see the paintball episode? Hilarious!!)
But I have never seen Iron Chef or Without a Trace, but now I’m tempted! :)
Yes! That’s the guy! Is that show funny or what? I adore Troy and Abed. And the paint ball episode – love. How about Joel’s arms and abs on that episode? Think I could have talked about that for my lust post… ;)
Without a Trace is no longer on, and I miss my weekly fix on Enrique!
I know, I know. I was kind of surprised by how ripped he is. Hubba hubba!
Hey! I’m late….but I’m here, dammit!
Anyhoo….Han Solo might not be my character of choice for Mr. Ford, but Mr. Ford I WILL take.
You crack me right up, Kristen. I love that everyone is here reading you and joining in this adventure at Motherese. It is clear to me that they all recognize, as I do, how special and talented you are. And again, it makes me go looking for REAL ESTATE in a certain AREA I know.
;)
