Suh-Pwize!

Apr 07

Before heading to bed the other night, Big Boy told me that he had left me a “suh-pwize” in my bedroom. After putting the boys down to sleep and puttering around in the living room, Husband and I headed to bed a few hours later, having completely forgotten Big Boy’s warning.

Imagine our suh-pwize when we happened upon this little friend, lying in wait for us at the foot of our bed.

Do you like surprises?  How do you feel about suh-pwizes?  What was the best surprise you were ever treated to?

I love a good surprise! And how cute that Big Boy thought to do that!

(On the other hand, I’m not crazy about creepy crawly things, so no live creepy-crawlies are good surprises around here.)

When my younger son “ballooned” the kitchen for me last November (one of my “joy” episodes) – that was VERY cool. Definitely a good surprise.

I loved your post today, Kristen. It brings back so many memories. When Chad was little he used to pick up bugs, frogs, spiders, lizards etc. and bring them to show me. He knew that I couldn’t take them from him but then he would promptly leave them on my lap and wander off again. I spent my life yelling for my care assistant to remove these creatures from my lap. They were just as scared. Oh boy, what our children put us through!

Thanks for a good laugh!

I love surprises! Big Boy must love Mommy and Daddy to share such a lovely surprise with you all.

I love it when kids do this! Only yesterday, my little girl asked me to wait outside the room whilst she finished off a note to me. It read Dir Mummy, I luf you. My mummy is bootiful! Talk about melt my heart x

Melt my heart indeed! I think my tear ducts will be permanently turned on when my little guys learn how to pen such lovely letters. :)

Oh, he must be such a great little character, leaving surprises already! I Love surprises. I know some people Hate them; my ex hated them and I never understood why. Control issues, bad experience? I also love to surprise people.

This is exactly the sort of thing my own son would do. I find it so very cute and endearing and reflective of their personalities. So fun!

P.S. I love a good surprise! You know, one that really takes you and leaves you feeling all happy inside.

I love love love surprises – being surprised and surprising others.

Being whisked away in the middle of the work day to a romantic getaway is nice, but I live for the little moments too: waking up to the aroma of coffee and pancakes on the weekend when your partner wakes up before you to get the baby and lets you to sleep in. Oh how I love those.

Kristen @ Motherese April 8, 2010 at 6:52 pm

My husband going to get the baby and letting me sleep in would be just about the best surprise I can imagine these days!

I love little surprises. Like Big Boy’s. Big surprises? Not so much. I wonder if it is, indeed, a control thing?

Just plain adorable. That sort of moment is just exactly the kind of thing you forget as your children get older. Thank heavens for blogs – now you will have a permanent record of these tiny little moments that are so precious – and fleeting. As I’ve said a million times, I so wish blogging had been around when my boys were babies. They are such a great way to record childhood.

This is adorable – and so funny! Oh, it brings a smile to my face.

I’m with Kitch. Little surprises are great. Big surprises are (usually) scary. And actually, I like to have an inkling of something all the time.

PS – Congrats on UConn!

Your comment made me consider the ways in which UConn’s poor play in the first half of the championship game on Tuesday night was a very, very bad surprise – and the fact that they rallied in the second half to win? A wonderful surprise indeed! :)

Certainly better than the surprises my cats used to leave for me: half-eaten, half-dead lizards.

Best surprise ever?? Hubby surprised me with a wedding vows renewal ceremony in Hawaii…complete with a professional photographer and conch-blowing minister.

Dude, the romance never ends in their life, does it? I am forever envious…
Not that I don’t have my own fantastic marriage, but really? A surprise trip to Hawaii for THAT?
All kinds of awesome, I say!

I’m with Sarah: Liz and her Hubby do set the bar rather high in the romantic surprise department. These days I’m overjoyed with flowers from the grocery store! :)

I wonder if his motivation was to share something that he loved or to try to make you laugh or even a tiny bit startled? In any event, he certainly is clever!

Had a not-so-great surprise yesterday. The lawn sprinkler service team was out to do a little repair and checkup and discovered that we had punctured a bunch of pvc pipes when we installed the temporary fence around the dog run area. Thankfully, they were already there, so everything got fixed.

So, I adore good surprises but am not real keen on less-than-good surprises.

Ugh, Diane, that doesn’t sound like a pleasant surprise at all. I hope there won’t be an even worse surprise when you get the bill. :)

Hahahah! That is sooo cute! Kids make me laugh. My nephew once surprised me with a handful of dandelions.

Love it! Mine prefer to be the surprise. I can’t tell you how many corners I’ve turned only to have them jump out at me. They are always so proud of themselves!

Probably your “suh-pwize” just wanted to kiss your feet, not nibble your toes. => I love surprises, little or big, and I love getting and giving them. Best big surprise: a trip to Paris from my husband a couple of years ago. Best little surprise: any night said husband brings home dinner so I don’t have to cook! =>

First we hear about Liz’s husband taking her to Hawaii – and now we hear about Stacia’s husband taking her to Paris. Husband better watch out; standards are being set pretty high around here!

I’m with TKW on big surprises. But little ones — those make a day special. I remember trying to leave small-scale surprises for my parents when I was little (say, making breakfast for them, where said meal was a slice of toast). The best part was when they acted appreciative.

I think the suh-pwize’s cousin is living at my house. I often find him wrapped around a bed post or hanging on a door knob. Love it!

That is too cute :)
I don’t like surprises… when I have a hint that they’re coming… you know the kind! But I love a real genuine loving surprise.

This is too much. Not sure how I feel about surprises. But the best surprise was when my man proposed – in our own kitchen with little fanfare and much love. Best surprise by far :)

How awesome!! Little “suhpwizes” are amazing! I like and dislike surprises. I don’t try and figure out what I am getting for my birthday or Christmas (probably because I provide a list…). Yet, I like to have a say on a romantic getaway (whatever that means). My poor husband has quickly realized that surprising me with food is NOT a good idea. But, surprising me with a lovely back rub is ALWAYS a good idea. : )

I LOVE surprises! Hubby’s surprise for Mother’s Day last year? U2 in concert, in Boston…Best surprise ever!

As for the kids, any surprise, little notes, unexpected hugs or kisses, are always welcome!

The picture is priceless, Kristen!

PS. I am eagerly awaiting my book to get prepared for Book Club! Should get here tomorrow!

Ha, great surprise. Unfortunately, our kids leave things like legos laying on the carpet which cause immediate pain when stepped on in the dark.

Reply

Kristen @ Motherese April 8, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Oh yes, we’ve got those kind of surprises around here too. I think that Legos might indeed be the most painful on a bare foot!

This brought to mind the days of potty training, when it seemed necessary to let my older son run around sans pants or pull-ups and hoping that he would spontaneously gravitate to the little potty.

Our old place had dark hardwood floors, so you can imagine my sup-wise when I got up to pee in the middle of the night and stepped into man’s first sculpture.

I’d have rather had a stuffed snake :)

Kristen @ Motherese April 8, 2010 at 7:18 pm

“Man’s first sculpture.” Priceless. :)

I have had many good surprises from my kids. Some of the best are when they spontaneously hug me and I look down and see nothing but love in their eyes.

What a thoughtful young man!

I enjoy surprises too. However, all of my guys tend to be a little too practical. So instead I get to surprise them.

This is adorable. To answer your question though, in general I don’t like surprises a la hiding behind the door and jumping out kind. I do love the diamond necklace disguised in a takeout box kind. No, haven’t had that. Yet. Prolly never; I’m a realist. I know my husband….

Reply

Liz April 12, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Hey now, I know I’m late on this, but I must clarify: the trip was NOT a surprise…just the ceremony part. And HEL-LO…the question WAS “Best surprise ever”! Like, in life! Lest you all think I get swept off to the islands on a regular occurence…

Reply

Kristen @ Motherese April 12, 2010 at 2:50 pm

I choose to continue to believe that your hubby planned the whole trip as a surprise. I like to live vicariously through others’ romantic surprises – even if they don’t happen to be true. :)
